Find out more about these attractions:

  • Chinatown – A cultural journey into one of the largest Chinese quarters outside of Asia. Start at the green-and-ocher gateway (a gift from Taiwan) at Grant Avenue and Bush Street for a tour of herbalists, souvenir shops, restaurants and jewelry dealers. The narrow, crowded streets and alleys of the 24-square-block area are best explored on foot (parking is difficult). Shops open as early as 9:30 a.m., closing about 9:30 p.m.

  • Golden Gate Park – The Park, which opened in 1870 on a barren stretch of sand dunes, today boasts more than 6,000 varieties of plants and a redwood memorial grove. The 1,017-acre park encompasses the Japanese Tea Garden, M. H. de Young Museum (closed until 2005), California Academy of Sciences, the Strybing Arboretum and Botanical Gardens, Conservatory of Flowers, a herd of buffalo, and two windmills. There are also miles of hiking, jogging, skating and biking trails.

  • Nice PalcePalace of Fine Arts – Have you ever wondered about the history of the Palace of Fine Arts, the magnificent home of the Exploratorium? Created as part of the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition, the Palace was designed as a "valentine for San Francisco" by renowned architect Bernard Maybeck, and was made to last one year. The people of San Francisco decided to keep the imposing structure which, over time, held art exhibitions, telephone books, and army jeeps.

  • North Beach – San Francisco's North Beach neighborhood is also known as Little Italy.

  • Golden Gate Bridge – Described as one that "couldn't be built," the famous bridge opened in 1937 to become the most photographed man-made structure in the world. Its distinctive international orange spans 1.2 miles/2 km between San Francisco and the Marin Headlands. The suspension bridge design permits a sway of 27 ft./8 m at midspan. A pedestrian sidewalk provides one of the most dramatic and beautiful views anywhere in the city.

  • Twin Peaks – Twin Peaks provides sweeping views of the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, Angel Island, Yerba Buena Island, Berkeley, Oakland, Downtown San Francisco and much of the San Francisco Bay and beyond.  [Top]
